Kaupena Soon is a criminal defense attorney practicing statewide. He is a member in good standing with the Hawai'i State Bar Association and licensed to practice in all courts in the State of Hawaii as well as the United States District Court, District of Hawai'i.
Before going on his own, Mr. Soon was a partner at the Law Firm of Akamu Soon, LLLP where he practiced criminal defense and was the managing partner. Mr. Soon also serves as a per diem judge in the Family Court.
Mr. Soon served as a Deputy Public Defender from 2011 to 2016. As a deputy public defender, he assisted in defending all manner of criminal cases. Thousands of clients have been represented by Mr. Soon and he has taken numerous cases to trial.
Mr. Soon earned his Bachelor of Science in Facilities Management from Brigham Young University - Provo where he also was a member of the BYU Rugby team. He went on to receive his Juris Doctorate from the William S. Richardson School of Law, where he captained the Native American Moot Court Team and also received a CALI Award in Excellence in Federal Indian Law. After graduating Mr. Soon clerked for the Honorable Judge Greg K. Nakamura, Circuit Court of the Third Circuit.
Prior to attending law school Mr. Soon worked as both a project manager and facilities manager and is experienced in federal contracts and vendor relations.
Mr. Soon is passionate about protecting the rights afforded under the Constitution and diligently fights for his clients when the government has violated those rights.
